History

In the Baroque period, the Orangery was not only used for storing rare and exotic plants but also played a significant role in courtly festivities. The Orangery, constructed after the mid-18th century, served as the venue for numerous receptions, celebrations, and theatrical performances under Joseph II. It was here that the famous musical competition between Wolfgang A. Mozart and Antonio Salieri took place, and where the Vienna Congress danced. The plants in the Orangery, as well as the Orangery garden, which was designed as both an ornamental and utility garden, were essential elements in the staging of these events.

Orangery and Citron House

At 189 meters long and 10 meters wide, the Orangerie Schönbrunn is one of the two largest Baroque orangeries in the world, alongside the one at Versailles. The south façade features an alternating series of large and smaller round-arched bays separated by rusticated pilasters adorned with masks. Inside, a rhythmic sequence of shallow vaults is heated by an underfloor hypocaust system, maintaining a temperature suitable for overwintering citrus trees and other tub plants. The adjoining semicircular Citron House at the eastern end of the Orangery Garden was likely used for cultivating tropical plants less suited to the climatic conditions in the elongated hall of the Orangery.

The Orangery also hosted dazzling court festivities. Joseph II particularly enjoyed arranging banquets in the plant-filled Orangery, inspired by those he had seen during his journey to Russia in the winter garden of the imperial palace in St. Petersburg. One notable event was the ‘Spring festival on a winter’s day’ held on 6th February 1785.
